* Minimally Invasive Spinal Procedures

Surgery for low back pain causes morbidity associated in the lower back, especially with traditional open methods, which include such conditions as postlaminectomy syndrome, epidural fibrosis, and muscular atrophy. As a result, there has been a trend to perform procedures with less patient morbidity. Minimal access spinal technologies improve patient comfort by decreasing postoperative pain and morbidity. Minimally invasive spine surgery is evolving to maximize the benefits of surgery while minimizing surgical morbidity. They rely on endoscopic techniques. In this brief pamphlet we will review the common minimal invasive spinal procedures.

Indications for minimally invasive spine surgery are similar to traditional open procedures. Location of a herniated disc dictates the appropriate minimally invasive approach. Optimal candidates are those with a single-level herniation that have not undergone previous surgery and discs which occupy less than 50% of the spinal canal, with limited migration or sequestration of free fragments.
