NEUROSURGICAL DIVISION
The Dubrovnik General Hospital disposes now of a Neurosurgical Division.
Neurosurgery is specialized in the microsurgical and less invasive treatment of brain and spinal lesions. It is equipped to offer modern day treatment options for general and special conditions. The initial spectrum involves the diagnosis, treatment and post-operative care of:
- head trauma - intracerebral lesions such as tumors and hematomas - cerebral spinal fluid circulation problems (hydrocephalus) - spinal pathology such as: cervical disc herniations, cervical myelopathy, lumbar spinal canal stenosis spinal instability - acute and chronic pain syndromes
During 2010 and through further infrastructural support and more equipment, the Neurosurgical Division is also qualifled to perform stereotactic operations. This a special image-guided technique that allows for example to perform biopsies of the brain and remove hematomas minimaly invasive. Together with the introduction of the Magnetic Resonance in the Hospital, patients from Dubrovnik and area can be fully diagnosed and treated here. Microsurgery allows together with other techniques for a truly minimal invasive resolutive treatment and remains the „Golden Standard“ in comparasion with recent and not evidenced based cncepts. Fundamental is always a patient tailored treatment, this means to combine different techiques to best resolve the problem of the patient based on his individual diagnosis and situation. For this it is necessary to offer and be able to perform a wide variety of proven and safe techniques.
Nowadays it is no longer correct to speak about „classical operations“ in an outdated manner. Micro-neurosurgery was and is the origin and promotor of less invasive surgery and is characterized by a minimal tissue manipulation and trauma. Through the use of the microscope smaller incisions are performed and patients can leave the Hospital for exampie after a lumbar or cervical disc operation after 1-2 days!

The Neurosurgical Division closely collaborates with other instritutions in and outside of Croatia and has full recongition and support of international accredited societies such as: ISMISS (International Society for Minimal Intervention in Spinal Surgery), SAS (Spine Arthoplasty Society), AAMISMS (American Academy of Minimal Invasive Spinal Medicine and Surgery) and ISLASS (International Society for Laser Assisted Spinal Surgery) among others.

Neurosurgery in Dubrovnik is concerned in applying and developing further treatment guidelines and protocols to optimize patient care and surgical results and its specialist has already developed such protocols which are being applied in other contries. Through a correct diagnosis and treatment, not only do the patients benefit but unnecessary costs are avoided for the patients and the Health System. Technical developments are being introduced on a daily basis in medicine but they have to be used correctly and proven to be beneficial.
Neurosurgery disposes of its own ward with trained and dedicated nursing staff.
